With effect from 2012, the civil services preliminaries will now constitute an aptitude test, replacing the old tests. The candidates will have to appear for two papers, both are objective type exams. The first paper tests their knowledge of history, Indian polity geography, general knowledge, current affairs, etc. The second paper tests the candidate on skills like comprehension, mental ability, logical reasoning etc.
Crack Civil Services Prelims (Paper - 2) covers the topics for Paper 2 of the new preliminaries test. It covers all the 10 areas that the candidate will be tested on. These are interpersonal skills, mental ability, logical reasoning, analytical ability, decision making, problem solving, logical comprehension, basic numeracy data interpretation, and English language comprehension skills.
The book goes in-depth into each section. Some of the sections are divided into several chapters to break down complex topics. For instance, mental ability section has chapters on series, classification, coding and decoding, and analogy. Logical reasoning section has chapters on blood relation, direction sense, ranking test, word formation, Venn diagrams, number puzzle, and syllogism.
Analytical ability section is divided into three topics - statement and assumptions, statement and arguments, and statement and conclusions. The section on decision making focuses on the topics of administrative courses of action, selection and selection criteria, and has case studies. Logical comprehension section covers logical reasoning and critical reasoning.
Basic numeracy covers these topics - numbers and their relations, percentage, order of magnitude, time and work, mensuration, and advanced maths. Data interpretation is divided into chapters on data interpretation and data sufficiency.
The logical division of the coverage into subjects and relevant subdivisions makes it easy for the readers to prepare for the exam in a smooth logical flow. Crack Civil Services Prelims (Paper - 2) covers the topic of interpersonal skills and communication skills with relevance to the civil service prelims. With its coverage of all the topics for the exam, it serves as a preparation material for students taking up the exams in the new revised model.
